Resolving Rental Disputes Through Mediation
At the Rent Tribunal on Statia, we aim to resolve rental disputes through mediation – a process where both the tenant and landlord can openly discuss the issue with the help of a neutral third party. Our goal is to help both sides understand each other and reach a fair agreement without having to go to a hearing.
For example, imagine a situation where a landlord is not carrying out necessary maintenance on a rental property. The tenant is frustrated, but it turns out the landlord has not been given permission to enter the home to do the repairs. In mediation, we bring both parties together to talk through the problem.
During the session, the tenant can explain their concerns—perhaps they want advance notice before anyone enters the home. The landlord can also share their side, explaining the need to access the property to fix the issues. With our help, they might agree on a schedule for repairs with proper notice, restoring trust and keeping the property in good condition.
Mediation is confidential, free of charge, and often helps prevent further conflict.
